This presentation will use the SAVE-02 trial as a case study in the design and analysis of a multicenter stepped-wedge cluster randomized trial. The case study will focus on practical issues including site-level rollout, outcome selection, clustering, non-normal patient-level outcomes, and simulation-based power calculations. The discussion will connect these applied design decisions to broader lessons from stepped-wedge studies, complemented by a structured review of practical challenges and recommendations.

John Rice is a Research Assistant Professor of Biostatistics at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. He joined the University of Michigan faculty in 2022 following faculty and leadership roles at the University of Colorado and postdoctoral training at the University of Rochester. His research develops statistical methods for clinical trials and time-to-event data, with applications in oncology, vaccine studies, and pragmatic clinical research.

Bret Hanlon is an Associate Research Professor of Biostatistics and the Associate Director of the Statistical Analysis of Biomedical and Educational Research (SABER) unit at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. He joined the University of Michigan faculty in July 2025, following a 15-year tenure at UW–Madison.
