MICHR’s New K12 Scholars Program Accepting Applications Through March 1

The new MICHR K12 is a two-year award that provides protected research time, mentorship, and competency-based career development for translational scholars with a doctoral degree in a clinical or health focus (e.g., MD, DDS, PharmD, PhD).

Awardees will receive career development training in addition to concierge-level support as they connect with the vast U-M resources. Individuals appropriate for this program will be (1) completing a postdoctoral fellowship and promoting into their first faculty appointment at the University of Michigan, or (2) within the first one to two years of their first academic appointment at the University of Michigan. Persons ready to prepare their own independent K are not eligible for this new program. Eligible applicants can be from any U-M campus (Ann Arbor, Flint, Dearborn).



Eligibility:

  • Individuals with a MD, DDS, PharmD, or PhD with a health science focus

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident

  • Program provides trainees with funding for salary, research, and career development

  • Funding is strictly utilized over a span of two years

  • The program begins Spring/Summer 2023.



K12 scholars develop their own tailored training program that includes:

  • a translational research practicum

  • didactic course work in regulation sciences, research ethics, biostatistics, and/or specialty electives relating to a field of interest

  • attendance at MICHR career development seminars

  • presentation of research through national events

  • cross-disciplinary mentoring designed to assist with career development and the scholar’s translational project

  • focus on scientific communications and community relationships



Applications require:

  • a short 5-page research proposal

  • a plan for training and career development

  • a strong mentoring team

  • a budget and budget justification
